In studying for my sermon for last Sunday, I came across these three statements about the value, importance, and power of prayer:
- Thomas Lyle: “I had rather stand against the canons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.”
- Thomas Watson: “The angel fetched Peter out of prison, but it was prayer that fetched the angel.”
- John Calvin: “The principle exercise which the children of God have is to pray; for in this way they give a true proof of their faith.” [emphasis his]
Most of us understand the importance of prayer, we understand we’ve been commanded to pray, we even know how to pray and a good pattern for prayer, but most of us are still weak in prayer. Seeing and hearing the power of prayer in keeping us from sin (like the disciples) is and should be a great stimulant to pray.
