A few years ago, I began subscribing to Christian History & Biography magazine. Each issue of the quarterly journal (about 32-48 pp. per issue) dealt with one single topic — a prominent person in church history (e.g., Martin Luther, or C. S. Lewis), a movement (e.g., the Puritans), or an event (faith in the Middle Ages). Some I found more compelling reading than others, but invariably the topics were addressed in a readable and reasonably thorough manner for an introduction to the topic.
Alas, a year or so ago, the publisher announced that the magazine would no longer exist in a print edition, though it would continue to have a presence online (a sorrow for those like me who like a little ink remainder on the finger tips after reading book, journal, or newspaper).
However, for those who are inclined to listen to such things, a few select past issues of the print edition are being offered by Christian Audio as .mp3 files — for $4.98 per issue, instead of the regular $12.95. A list of the available issues is here.
