Another view of God’s creation

This morning Al Mohler overviewed new photographs that have been provided by the Hubble telescope. These photographs are astounding representations of the vastness of the created world.

Every time I see something like this, I am reminded of the words of the psalmist:

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained;
What is man that You take thought of him,
And the son of man that You care for him? (Ps. 8:3-4)

Two thoughts in particular are dominant in these verses — the vast stretch of the heavens is the working of God’s fingers. That is, there is nothing to this act that causes God any difficulty or strain. The magnitude of this creation to God is nothing more than a child playing in a sandbox creating small castles and empires. For all the magnificence of God’s physical creation, we have seen nothing that comes close to being demanding on His power.

Secondly, to view this great creation is to be in wonder of His grace that sees fit to think of man, and to care for him — ultimately in the provision of His own Son to effect our salvation. How glorious a God He must be to be so grand and great and still be compassionate on the needs of sinful men.
