Prayer and the power of God

We have something to say to God every day.  Many are not sensible of this, and it is their sin and misery; they live without God in the world, they think they can without him, are not sensible to their dependence upon him, and their obligations to him, and therefore for their parts they have nothing to say to him; he never hears from them, no more than the father did from his prodigal son… [Matthew Henry, The Secret of Communion with God]

I have something to say to God each day because I am weak.  I am neither independent nor self-sufficient.  In fact, I not only am not adequate, I am inadequate.

Conversely, God is strong.  He is independent and self-sufficient — fully adequate for every man and every need.  By being intentional in praying, I acknowledge day by day my dependence on Him and at the same avail myself of His power which He is wont to give. So let us pray, for

When we are too busy to pray, we are too busy to have true spiritual power. [D. Edmond Hiebert]
