It was after I finished seminary that I was introduced to the Puritans. A friend gave me a book by Thomas Watson, I thanked him, and put it on my shelf where it sat for several years.
One day I was browsing through my shelves looking for something; I saw the book, picked it up, and began reading. I was hooked. Watson became one of my favorites as I began reading a variety of Puritan authors and books.
I claim to be no expert on the Puritans, but I do appreciate their thoroughness in considering a Biblical passage and a theological consideration. I read them (as I encourage others to as well) with caution. Their hermeneutic (how they interpret Scripture) varies from mine quite significantly in places, so you have to be careful in reading them. However, their passion for the glory of God and the supremacy of Scripture is rarely superceded.
Recently I was reminded of the Monergism website that contains a treasure of Puritan writings. This is a great place to be introduced to some of the writings (and the price is right). Read with discernment and with a view to increasing your joy in God. (I might suggest starting with Watson, one of the easier reading Puritans).
