The gracious tests of storms

I’ve recently begun reading the biography of Robert Murray M’Cheyne.  And this weekend I came across this statement from him that I’d come across in another source:

You will never find Jesus so precious as when the world is one vast howling wilderness.  Then he is like a rose blooming in the midst of desolation, a rock rising above the storm.

We may regularly give ascent to our love of Christ and yearning for Him, but it is in the midst of the testing winds of the storm that it will be revealed how well we hold on to our affections of Him — whether we have mere infatuation with Him or an abiding love for Him.  This is His grace to us — to give us a clear view of our inner man and our fellowship with Him.
