Today’s Scripture reading includes Dt. 32:35 —
Vengeance is Mine, and retribution,
In due time their foot will slip;
For the day of their calamity is near,
And the impending things are hastening upon them.’
It is this verse that served as the text for Jonathan Edwards’ well-known sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.”
That sermon and the inevitability of the judgment of God for those who do not live by faith before God by looking to and trusting in Christ are a fitting reminder on today — Good Friday.
On this day, we remember our sovereign, exalted Lord and Master who pointed Himself to the cross and unflinchingly and joyfully absorbed its shame-filled death and the wrath of God poured from God’s cup of judgment. It was on this day He accomplished redemption for those who trust in Him, so that their feet will no longer slip into the judgment of God.
