Samuel’s books are important for the nation of Israel for they provide not only the monarchy for the nation of Israel, but also include the Davidic Covenant (God’s promise that the Messiah would come from the line of David).
Yet in the midst of these books there is much about the reality of sin and strife that emanate from the lives of some of God’s choice servants — men like Samuel and David — men who were personally holy, used significantly in accomplishing God’s purposes, and yet also made ungodly choices with their families that led ultimately to very tragic consequences.
In the midst of attempting to sort out those stories, however, is the reality that God is gracious and faithful to His people to accomplish His purposes for His people.
As you read the books of Samuel, consider also reading some additional background material to Samuel: “Reading Samuel.”
