Hosea is one of the most unusual books in Scripture. It has to be labeled as such since the bitter marriage of the prophet Hosea to his prostitute wife stands as a picture of the tragic relationship between the gracious God and His disobedient and rebellious people.
The tendency is for readers to align themselves with Hosea — “I am suffering just like the prophet Hosea,” we reason. “And all those around me are just like Gomer, seeking to destroy our relationship through sinful actions against me.” Yet that is not the intent of the book. There is only one faithful person, and that is God. The rest of us are all just like Gomer — intentional in our sinful hostility against God.
Yet the book doesn’t focus on the disobedience of Gomer and Israel alone — it is a great picture of the grace of God and His promises to restore His people Israel to Himself. Read more about the book here.
