Yesterday I read an article from the Dallas Morning News about recently retired Dallas Cowboy football player Duke Preston. He left the gridiron to prepare for the pulpit, becoming a student at Dallas Theological Seminary.
Some might wonder why he turned down such a large amount of money to play football (about $1 million for this season) to go into vocational ministry and earn about $30,000 this year working for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
The story reminded me of some wise counsel given to me as I contemplated going into the pastorate. A friend, mentor, and pastor wrote me and said something like, “If there is anything in the world that you would rather do than go into ministry, do it. But there is nothing on earth that compares with the glory of ministry, and I wouldn’t trade being the President of the United States for being a pastor.”
