It was my first real job. Every morning I would get up early, go down to the corner, and pick up a bundle of newspapers, fold them, bind them with a rubber band, put them in my canvas carrying bag and deliver them. On only the second or third Sunday, I showed up at the appointed time and place and waited for my papers. And waited. And waited. The papers never arrived. For some unknown reason, my distributor overlooked me, leaving me nothing to deliver to my waiting customers.
It was one of my first experiences with someone’s unfaithfulness, though certainly not my last. You have been let down by someone you trusted too, haven’t you? Sure you have. Maybe it was some minor inconvenience; perhaps it tore apart a relationship. The antidote in any case is to remember that while people may (and inevitably will) disappoint you, God will never fail you.
To what is God faithful? Here is a short list.
- His covenant (Deut. 7:9)
- His choosing of His nation (Isaiah 49:7)
- His election of His (NT) people (1 Cor. 1:9; 1 Thess. 5:24)
- Helping His people through difficulty (1 Cor. 10:13; 2 Thess. 3:3)
- Christ’s position as High Priest and Intercessor (Heb. 2:17)
- Himself (2 Tim. 2:13; Heb. 3:2; Rev. 19:11)
- His promises (Heb. 10:23; Rev. 21:5; 22:6)
- His creation & doing right (1 Pt. 4:19)
- His forgiveness (1 Jn. 1:9)
Of what good is God’s faithfulness?
“The apprehension of this blessed truth will preserve us from worry. To be full of care, to view our situation with dark forebodings, to anticipate the morrow with sad anxiety, is to reflect poorly upon the faithfulness of God. It will check our murmurings. The Lord knows what is best for each one of us, and one effect of resting on this truth will be the silencing of our petulant complainings. It will beget increasing confidence in God. When we trustfully resign ourselves, and all our affairs into God’s hands, fully persuaded of His love and faithfulness, the sooner shall we be satisfied with His providences and realize that ‘He doeth all things well.’” [A. W. Pink, The Attributes of God.]
God is faithful. He is faithful to secure our salvation. He is faithful to forgive us when we fail. He is faithful to protect His promises. God is faithful.
