Writing in World a few years ago, Gene Veith contemplated the ethics of abortion:
Acting outside of vocation is at the root of many of our problems.…Why is abortion wrong? A mother is called to love and serve her child, not take its life. Why is euthanasia wrong? Doctors are called to love and serve their neighbors by healing their patients, not killing them.
On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we do well to remember that one’s right to life and our responsibility to protect that life is because both of our lives were given for a purpose — to glorify God — and that purpose by definition excludes the intentional taking of a life.
