Preaching on Ephesians 5:22-33 these weeks, I’ve not only been reading the usual number of commentaries, but also numerous articles and sections of books on the topic of marriage and manhood.
So out of all that I’ve read, here is the most helpful sentence I’ve read this week, from a commentator of about a century ago, B. F. Westcott:
“Christ loved the church not because it was perfectly loveable, but in order to make it such.”
This is true of every earthly husband as well. I love my wife in order to make her more lovely to Christ.
