Learn much of Jesus

For two and a half months, we’ve been reading each weekday in the Gospels.  What shall we do with all this talk of Jesus?

Learn much of the Lord Jesus. For every look at yourself, take ten looks at Christ. He is altogether lovely. Such infinite majesty, and yet such meekness and grace, and all for sinners, even the chief. Live much in the smiles of God. Bask in his beams. Feel his all-seeing eye settled on you in love, and repose in his almighty arms. Cry after divine knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding. Seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasure. [Robert Murray M’Cheyne (1813-1843), Memoir and Remains of the Rev. Robert Murray M’Cheyne.]

  1. Hi! Great post, I love reading ur posts. I am wondering if you are aware that God is never referred to as an All Seeing Eye, only Satan is. He is referred to as “The Eye of Horus” as well. Knowing that we are made in Gods image we can conclude God is not a singluar eye and probably shouldnt be praised as such. We also see the concept of the All Seeing Eye used in pagan religons, Hindu, and Buddhism. However our Lord never asks we call him such. Thanks for your consideration on this terminology.

    1. You might note that M’Cheyne does not use “all-seeing eye” as a title. It is simply a reference to the truth that because God is omniscient, all things are seen and known by Him (cf. Job 34:21; Ps. 33:13; also Ps. 139, esp. vv. 7-12). Moreover, Satan is not referred to as “the all seeing eye” in Scripture, and in fact, because he is a created being and is not eternal or infinite in any of his dimensions, he cannot see everything. By nature of his status as a creating being, it is impossible for him to see everything. He may be fast, enabling him to see much, but he cannot see everything and is therefore not an “all seeing eye.”

The Lord is to be praised for all of His attributes, including His omniscience, and as M’Cheyne noted in that statement, that His eye is on us (cf. Mt. 10:29-31) is to be a great source and comfort to those who belong to Him through faith in Christ.
