Why worship God?

Some days the body awakens without a song in the heart.

Some days the body is alive but the soul seems dead.

Some days we hear a call to worship and our heart is cold.

Perhaps we are in the midst of grief over a child’s death, or we are battling an unexpected and unrelenting disease, or we are estranged from a friend, or we have been entertaining some secret sin in our minds, or we have become apathetic to time in the word of God.  Whatever the cause, there are days when we are reluctant to praise God — there just doesn’t seem to be any good in our lives to stimulate worship.

When your heart is questioning, “why worship God?” consider a psalm like Psalm 68:

  • Worship God because that is the activity of the righteous (v. 3).
  • Worship God because His name is the Lord (v. 4).
  • Worship God because He is a father of the fatherless (v. 5).
  • Worship God because He is a judge for the widows (v. 5).
  • Worship God because God is in his holy habitation (v. 5).
  • Worship God because He makes a home for the lonely (v. 6).
  • Worship God because He leads the prisoners into prosperity (v. 6).
  • Worship God because He goes before (and leads) His people (v. 7).
  • Worship God because nature is subject to His authority (vv. 8-10).
  • Worship God because He controls the kings and armies of His enemies (vv. 11-14).
  • Worship God because the mountains are the possession and domain of God (vv. 15-16).
  • Worship God because He dwells with His people in holiness (v. 17).
  • Worship God because He has ascended on high (is preeminent) and has led into captivity those who are His captives (v. 18).
  • Worship God because He bears the burdens of His people (v. 19).
  • Worship God because He is the salvation of His people (v. 19).
  • Worship God because God is a God of deliverances (v. 20).
  • Worship God because God will destroy His enemies (vv. 21-23).
  • Worship God because we have seen others worship Him and be satisfied (vv. 24-27).
  • Worship God because God is strong and the source of our strength (v. 28).
  • Worship God because all men will worship Him (vv. 29-31).
  • Worship God because He eternally has dwelled in the highest of heavens (vv. 32-33).
  • Worship God because He is strong and majestic (v. 34).
  • Worship God because He alone is worthy of awe (v. 35).
  • Worship God because He gives His people strength and power (v. 35).

Why worship God?  Because only He is God.
