Our God who hears our prayers

Virtually every believer will acknowledge that he does not pray enough.  We don’t pray for a variety of reasons.  And one of those reasons is that we do not think highly enough about God who hears our prayers.  We have a deficient functional theology.  Oh, we would likely say the right words about God and His character, but functionally we don’t believe what we say.  And because we don’t believe God, we don’t pray.

So, to encourage our prayer life, we do well to remember the character of God.  Consider this sampling from the Psalms:

God hears (is not deaf to) and answers our prayers.

I was crying to the LORD with my voice,
And He answered me from His holy mountain. (3:4)

Blessed be the LORD,
Because He has heard the voice of my supplication. (28:6)

Evening and morning and at noon, I will complain and murmur,
And He will hear my voice.
He will redeem my soul in peace from the battle which is against me,
For they are many who strive with me.
God will hear and answer them —
Even the one who sits enthroned from of old — (55:17-19)

When God answers our prayers, it is a relief to our distress and an expression of His grace.

Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
You have relieved me in my distress;
Be gracious to me and hear my prayer. (4:1)

Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken. (55:22)

But certainly God has heard;
He has given heed to the voice of my prayer.
Blessed be God,
Who has not turned away my prayer
Nor His lovingkindness from me. (66:19-20)

We need God — He is our only help.

Help, LORD, for the godly man ceases to be,
For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men. (12:1)

Give ear to my prayer, O God;
And do not hide Yourself from my supplication.
Give heed to me and answer me;
I am restless in my complaint and am surely distracted (55:1-2)

As for me, I shall call upon God,
And the LORD will save me. (55:16)

God’s wisdom through answered prayer is life for His followers; if He does not answer, we die.

Consider and answer me, O LORD my God;
Enlighten my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death. (13:3)

For if You are silent to me,
I will become like those who go down to the pit. (28:1b)

As for me, I shall call upon God,
And the LORD will save me. (55:16)

Dependence and worship is the fitting attitude of prayer.

Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to You for help,
When I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary. (28:2)

The LORD is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore my heart exults,
And with my song I shall thank Him. (28:7)

If we indulge in willful sin, the Lord will not hear our prayers.

If I regard wickedness in my heart,
The Lord will not hear (66:18)
