Almost two decades ago I began preaching a sermon on Scripture and another sermon on prayer in January of every year. One of those first sermons was the first stanza of Psalm 119. Two or three years later I began preaching one stanza from that Psalm every January. And then a few years after that I added a second stanza in the middle of the year. After about a dozen years, I finished preaching Psalm 119 last Sunday. Then yesterday I wrapped up with a summary sermon on that Psalm.
The audio of all of those sermons can be accessed on the church website (sort with the category “Psalm 119”). The manuscripts and additional comments and reflections of most of those sermons are also on this blog site.
I have been particularly helped with this psalm by a number of resources:
- George Zemek, The Word of God in the Child of God (this work will be most beneficial if you have a working knowledge of Hebrew)
- Christopher Ash, Bible Delight (I have read several of Ash’s books to much benefit, and this was no exception)
- James Boice, Living by the Book (solid)
- Stephen Yuille, The Path of Life (he takes this as a lament psalm and while I don’t believe it totally fits that category, the overall scope of this work is very helpful)
- Charles Bridges, Psalm 119 (I have also seen some PDFs of his work on the web)
- Jesse Johnson, in “The Best of the Best for Psalm 119” has some additional helpful resources.
