We not only forget death, but the fact that we are mortals, as if no word concerning this has ever reached us, and we continue our foolish dream that we are to live forever. If any man in the meantime reminds us of the proverb that man is only a creature of a day, we […]

Read More Today’s Quote – Depravity (Ferguson)This morning I read a couple Psalms and an extended section in Hosea. Much of what I read carried the theme of “watch out, judgment is coming” for the nation of Israel. Reading of the coming judgment made parts of Psalm 95 stand out like bold-faced type: Come, let us worship and bow down, Let […]
Read More What grace have you received? The depravity of man is not a subject that is often widely embraced or enjoyed. “Thanks, Pastor, for telling me what a terrible sinner and how awful my condition is,” is not a typical response to the topic of sin and depravity. Yet two truths must be acknowledged — Scripture is unrelenting in its affirmation […]

It proposes objectives which demand no radical breach with man’s fallen nature. It judges the importance of things by the present and material results. It weighs success by numbers. Worldliness covets human esteem and wants no unpopularity. It knows […]

The faith that justifies is the faith that overcomes (1 John 5:4). By faith we obtain the ‘good report’ both with God and man. By faith we receive forgiveness; by faith we […]

Pink, The Attributes of God: [The sovereignty of God is] the exercise of His supremacy.…God does as He pleases, only as He pleases, always as He pleases. None can thwart Him, none can hinder Him. Divine sovereignty means that God is God in fact, as well as in name, that He is on […]
Read More Today’s Quote – Sovereignty (Pink)In writing the previous post about genealogies, I came across the following statement from John Piper. It is a reminder not only of the sovereignty of God over the course of our individual lives (our genealogies), but over the course of all history: The past is a record of setbacks and how people coped with […]
Read More One more thought about genealogies and history…We are in the midst of about 10 days of reading through the book of First Chronicles. Reading through endless lists of names that are difficult to pronounce for the English-speaking tongue and without having any references to any story to the majority of those names makes one wonder: just why does God list these […]

Our failures bring us face to face with the weaknesses and inadequacies that lie within, so that God’s strength can be made perfect in […]
