As I think back over the passages we’ve read in the past week (Genesis 1-17; Ps. 1-6), it is sobering how rapidly the story of sin progresses. Just think through the major narrative stories in these first chapters in Genesis: Genesis 3 — […]
Read More Bible reading reflectionsRandy Alcorn, Heaven: Satan need not convince us that Heaven doesn’t exist. He need only convince us that Heaven is a place of boring, unearthly existence. If we believe that lie, we’ll be robbed of our joy and anticipation, we’ll set our minds on this life and not the next, and we won’te be motivated […]

[Psalm 119] tells us that if we would grow in grace and in […]
Read More Today’s Quote – Scripture (Boice)At the beginning of a new year, we are wont to make resolutions. This will change. This time. It really will. Yet statistics I came across a few years ago have said that within one month, 45% of all people have not kept their resolutions. And only 19% keep their resolutions for as long as […]
Read More Having trouble praying?James Montgomery Boice, Living by the Book: We live in a day when people do not much value God’s Word, even in evangelical churches. We say that we value it, but our neglect of the Word belies our confession. We do not spend much time in serious Bible study. We do not memorize God’s Word, […]

Read More Today’s Quote – Worship (Frame)You may have noticed that the first few days of “Today’s Quote” this year have been quotes from John Calvin’s little book John Calvin, Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life. There’s a reason for that. This year (2009) is the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin. One of the goals I have […]

Twenty-two years ago today, I was living in Dallas and made a trip to the airport to pick up Raye Jeanne, who was living in Washington state at the time. She was coming for a 7-10 day visit between my school semesters. After picking her up, we stopped by the […]
Read More Today is an important dayJohn Calvin, Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life: The gospel is not a doctrine of the tongue, but of life. It cannot be grasped by reason and memory only, but is fully understood when it possesses the whole soul and penetrates to the inner recesses of the heart. Let nominal Christians cease from insulting […]

A sincere repentance […]
Read More Today’s Quote – Bible (Calvin)Each year I purchase a significant number of books. Most of these are related to Christianity — theologies, commentaries, spiritual life, church history, marriage, counseling, and the like — but I also will purchase other books as well — sports, gardening (for Raye Jeanne), histories, fiction, and books of interest to our girls. But for […]

That is, we are shy about declaring the gospel because we do not see it as a great threat to […]
