Fear of leaving the love of God might leave some thinking that the attention to doctrine practiced by the Ephesians is detrimental to a passionate, heart-filled following of Christ (I have a friend who leans in that direction).
Yet, John Piper this week made “A Plea for Heart Devotions and Head Study.” It is a brief call to marry both head and heart in the pursuit of Christ. They are not exclusive of each other, but united with each other. Just as Paul said:
Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you. [1 Tim. 4:16]
Head and heart. Doctrine and life. Knowledge and love. They all work together to make a man complete in Christ — an equipped follower and lover of God.
