Do not lose heart in doing good

Paul says, “Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary” (Gal. 6:9).

In the context, he is talking about doing the good of restoring a sinning brother to Christ (v. 1) — of carrying the heavy load of reconciliation (v. 2).  He’s speaking of examining his heart so that he serves out of humility and not pride (vv. 3-4) and he’s speaking of sharing his possessions with those who are faithful to disciple and train him (v. 6).  He’s talking about doing all that he does in the power of the Spirit and for eternal treasures rather than earthly treasures (vv. 7-8).

These are not insignificant tasks and works.  They are variously heavy and hard — they call for self-denial and gracious service.  So it is no wonder he says, “let us not lose heart…”  The temptation will be to lose heart in the midst of difficult people and convoluted circumstances.

Thinking of this verse, commentator Donald Guthrie insightfully says,

When a man tires while he is doing fine things it means he has temporarily lost his real sense of values.

So endure with others today — keep your eyes on the things that you have been taught to value by the clear instruction of God through His Word.
