A discerning mind exemplified

Last night while reading Memoirs & Remains of Robert Murray M’Cheyne, I came across his response when a friend of the family had said “That she was determined to keep by the world.”

What do you say about one who, like Demas, loves the world and with intention and volition walks away from Christ?

M’Cheyne penned a poem that concluded with these lines —

Away, then — oh, fly

From the joys of earth!

Her smile is a lie —

There’s a sting in her mirth.

Come, leave the dreams

Of this transient night,

And bask in the beams

Of an endless night.

Just as Solomon advised his son to do, with discernment M’Cheyne examined the circumstances of this woman’s poor decision and chose to bask in the beams of God’s truth rather than follow into the lair of her sting.
