This week we began reading the book of Leviticus in our Bible-reading plan. It is for most people a somewhat confusing book to read — and certainly disconnected from what NT believers understand about faith in Christ. After all, the system of sacrifices is long-departed. So how are we to understand these things?
In short, the book of Leviticus is primarily concerned with the sacrifices and offerings of the people of Israel to God in order that they might be able to commune with Him. The book also points out the holiness of God, and therefore also the fact that the people are unclean before God and deserving of death. Leviticus offers an alternative to certain death however, through the sacrifices. As such, it also foreshadows the work of Christ on the cross.
