Some particularly helpful resources in the battle against sin

This morning in the sermon notes, I had a fairly lengthy list of resources — books, audio, and articles — that I believe will be helpful encouragements in your battle against sin.

I had intended to make a couple of comments about those resources, and simply forgot to do so (which is happening more frequently these days if I don’t write things down!).  So here are those comments:

  • I spent some time perusing Kris Lundgaard’s book The Enemy Within again this week and was reminded why I appreciated it so much when I first read it a couple years ago — it is Biblical, clear, compelling writing.  The truths are profound and yet accessible to any reader.  I highly recommend this book (and four audio sermons by Lundgaard in which he condensed the material from this book).
  • John Piper has spent much time thinking about the relationship of the mind to our conduct and spiritual life.  There are many resources related to the life of the mind on the DG website and I have found them to be consistently good.  As a sample, I strongly encourage you to listen to the excerpt from his sermon, “Do You See the Joy of God in the Sun? Pt. 2.” In the excerpt he addresses the role of the mind in defeating the temptation of lust.
  • The point of this long list (and it could have been much longer, given the number of helpful resources I’ve acquired over the years — e.g., check out my blog on the topic mortification and sanctification) is not to have you read everything.  Just read something; check out a couple of resources, then pick something to read or listen to that will provide further stimulation and encouragement to godly living.
