In Ephesians 4:22-24, Paul explains one of the foundational principles for sanctification in the Christian life:  the believer is to put off (take off, stop) any activity that speaks of the ungodly life of unbelievers and the old, unredeemed man, and he is to put on (begin and continue) the activities of that reflect the new man that he is in Christ.  And those two activities will be possible as he allows his mind to be renewed by the Spirit of God using the Word of God.

Not wanting to leave the Ephesians and us confused about what he means by putting off, Paul then gives five illustrations of how are lives are to be conformed to the new life we have in Christ.  A simple chart might help us to see what he intends:
