It is for good reason that Jeremiah is called “the weeping prophet.” Not only is he the author of the book of Lamentations, but his ministry is also one of continued rejection. And not only did the people reject his warnings from the Lord, but God Himself promised Jeremiah that they would reject these admonitions and calls to repentance (7:27-34). So as he prophesied, he watched as they continually rejected him and then went into captivity.
But the book is also a book of hope as the people are promised a New Covenant that would be written on their hearts and not on tablets of stone. Under this New Covenant they will be able to obey as they had never been able to obey.
