Having just finished the book of Ephesians last Sunday, I am being asked pretty regularly these days, “what are you preaching next?”
I have several topical series in mind that I’d like to do soon, along with a couple of book studies (Titus probably later this year followed by Hebrews and/or 1 John). But next on the list is a 12-week topical series entitled, “Necessities of Life.” This series will address a number of truths and practices that each believer needs in order to thrive spiritually. The series is tentatively set up this way:
Truths We Need to Believe
- God is Sovereign — He is Master, and He is Good
- The Bible is True
- The Gospel — It’s for Everyday
- Sanctification — Progress Matters
- Pleasing God — One of Two Choices
- Trouble is Transformative
Habits We Need to Cultivate
- Read Your Bible
- Pray
- Share Your Faith — Always be Ready
- Relationships — No Lone Rangers Allowed
- Minister — Find and Outlet for Your Gifts
- Worship
I’ve been thinking of a series like this for several years and it began to take a clearer shape in my mind over the past couple of months. And then I recently completed reading a book that stimulated me to thinking even more precisely about the categories of needing transformation of both truth and practice in our lives. I highly recommend this book, Kevin DeYoung’s recent work, Don’t Call it a Comeback: the Old Faith for a New Day.
So until Sunday…

I like how your people are hungry and excited for what’s next. I also like the topics for your next series. Keep it up!
