Every year many people make plans on reading through the Bible in a year. It’s a worthy goal. But too many get bogged down somewhere in the middle of Numbers or one of the prophets, and never make it through the Bible.
What is more important than reading through the Bible in a year, is reading and meditating on the Scriptures each day. It is more important to soak the soul in one verse of Scripture than to read four chapters without thinking on what has been read.
So for next year, I have put together a Bible reading plan that will be more realistic for most people. The goal is not quantity of chapters, but quality of meditation. So for each day of reading (which will take the average reader no more than 5-10 minutes), the reader is also encouraged to meditate on the passage, answering questions like the following:
- What is the main idea/central truth?
- What are the key words in this section? What do they emphasize?
- What does this passage reveal about God?
- What does this passage reveal about me?
- What is one key verse that I can think about today?
- Pray the passage.
- Commit to do (at least) one thing that day that will reinforce what you learned.
This plan is a chronological arrangement of the New Testament (though because of differences in the ends of chapter divisions, this is not an exact harmony of the events of the gospels). The New Testament readings are arranged to be read Monday through Friday each week. Additionally, the plan provides sequential readings through the book of Psalms on Sunday mornings, so that the reader prepares himself for worship by reading the Old Testament song book. Saturdays are reserved for meditation — “what have a read this week that has particularly influenced me,” and for catching up missed readings.
I have formatted the readings in two different PDFs:
- The first is a four-page listing of the readings that can be printed on any printer (PDF).
- The second is formatted to be printed double-sided and folded, for easy storage in your Bible (PDF).
Along with this resource, I would also highly recommend a Bible memorization plan. I have recently begin using the Fighter Verse app and have found it to be a very good use of $2.99.

My name is Peter and am new here. Was looking for a bible study reading plan for next year and was excitedly happy to find it here. My prayer is to be able to adhere to it through out the whole of next year which I certainly know demands lots of discipline, and especially proper time planning. I hope God will give me the strength to.
Be blessed abundantly.
