Someone recently asked me for some sources of sermons that I liked to listen to on my iPod. Here is the answer I gave him:
You are right, I listen to many sermons on my iPod. I would probably start with one of the following pastors (I often like to mix them up, just for the sake of variety). All of them have podcast capabilities, which are explained on their websites.
- John MacArthur — the pastor of Grace Community Church in CA; you can get all of the audio from the church (including other SS teachers, conferences, etc…) here. All of MacArthur’s sermons are archived on the GTY website — you can pick and choose from topics or passages there. You can also use the weekly sermon podcast link to upload MacArthur’s sermons directly into iTunes. You can find other links to different kinds of podcasts (including his daily radio program) here.
- Tom Pennington — the pastor of Countryside Bible Church (Southlake, TX), he is probably the most consistent preacher I’ve ever listened to. I really like him and find him to always be clear, direct, and convicting. Whenever I have a Sunday off, I like to go to his church, if possible. The church website has an extensive archive of his sermons, or you can get them by podcast (search iTunes for “Countryside Bible Church” for the link, or paste http://www.countrysidebible.org/podcast.php?t=1 into your iTunes podcast subscription box.
- John Piper — I’ve probably listened to more Piper sermons than any other single preacher. The Romans series was very helpful to me personally. He’s preaching through John right now; he is gone fairly frequently so you won’t get sermons from him each week. The Desiring God website has all his sermons and many other resources also, like conferences and special events — which I also frequently download and listen to). Or you can download the podcast into iTunes. (You can also use the Desiring God app on an iPhone or iPad to download any message off their website.)
- Steve Lawson — Another preacher who may not be as well-known to many, he is always very encouraging and challenging. MacArthur has called him one of the finest preachers in the world right now. The church website archives all of his sermons and he also has a podcast for iTunes.
I also frequently link to significant sermon or conference audio on my blog. You can find those links here: sermons, more sermons, and conferences.
