The Son of Man as a Child
Luke 2:39-52
September 22, 2024
A mom and dad were still sleeping one morning when their young son came bounding into the bedroom and jumped onto their stomachs with significant news: “Today’s my birthday! It’s here! I’m five-years-old today!” And then holding up his open hand with all five fingers extended, he declared, “I’m a handful!”
Yes, he undoubtedly was. As all children are. Except one.
Luke’s purpose has been to reveal Jesus as the Son of Man — one who is genuine man. Christ’s birth emphasizes that reality. But He is also so much more than just the Son of Man — He is also the sinless Son of God — something that was evident even in His childhood. And one story from His childhood particularly demonstrates both His deity and manhood. And it is intended to make us worship Him. From this passage in Luke we learn —
Treasure Christ who is the genuine Son of Man — and Son of God.
Do you value Christ? Treasure Him? Delight in Him? Is He your greatest friend? Do you seek Him out for fellowship? Do you want Him above all things? Is He your all (Col. 3:11)? In this story from Jesus’ childhood, Luke offers three glimpses into the Son of Man so that we might treasure, understand, and worship Him…
