“Should We Look for Someone Else?” Part 2
Luke 7:24-35
September 14, 2025
Doubt is a reality of life. Even in the life of the believer.
- Abraham doubted that God would preserve him and his marriage when they were with Abimelech
- Abraham and Sarah both (initially) doubted that God could produce an heir through their aging bodies
- The people of Israel doubted that Moses would return from the mountain as he received the law from God so they asked Aaron to make an idol for them
- Judges is filled with account after account of Israel’s doubt of God’s goodness and the rebellious ways they pursued the ways of the world instead of trusting God
- Israel doubted the goodness of God and asked for a king “like the nations”
- Saul doubted that Samuel would return in time, so he presented an offering as if he was a priest
- Jonah doubted the goodness of God in saving the Ninevites
- Peter believed he could walk on water with Jesus — until he saw the waves…
- Demas doubted that Christ could satisfy, so he went the way of the world in Thessalonica
Doubt says, “I am not confident in God’s nature (goodness) or ability (strength) or love — so I will pursue another way of living life (apart from God’s way).”
In Luke’s Gospel, John the Baptist was not giving up on Christ, but he was confused about Christ (and perhaps about his own imprisonment). And so he sent a question to Jesus. And that question leads to a further teaching from Christ in Luke 7:24-35 about doubt/confidence and unbelief —
Be confident that Christ is the Christ because Christ did what only the Christ can do.
When doubts arise, be confident that Jesus is exactly who He claimed to be — the Son of Man and the Messiah who has come to earth to fulfill the promise of God and provide our redemption.
In recent passages we have seen Christ’s compassion for people — He cares. But He is more than just caring; He is God incarnate. He is everything John needed, the disciples needed, and we need. Let’s observe Christ’s provision for our doubts and fears in four interactions.
