I am a disciple of Jesus Christ

I am a part of the fellowship of the unashamed.
The die has been cast, I’ve stepped over the line; the decision has been made;
I am a disciple of Jesus Christ.
I will not look back, let up, slow down, back away or be still.
My past is redeemed; my present makes sense; my future is secure.
I no longer need pre-eminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudits or popularity.
I don’t have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded or rewarded .
I now live by faith, love by patience, live by prayer, and labor by power .
My pace is set; my gait is fast; my goal is the heaven. My road is narrow;
My way is rough; my companions few; my Guide reliable; my mission clear!
I cannot be bought, compromised, deterred, lured away, turned back, deluded or delayed.
I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity;
I will not negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, nor meander in the maze of mediocrity.
I will not give up, back up, let up, or shut up until I have prayed up, preached up, stored up, and stayed up the cause of Jesus Christ!
I am a disciple of Jesus Christ.
I must go until He returns; give until I drop;
preach until all know; and work until He comes.
And when He comes to get His own, He will have no trouble recognizing me;
My colors are flying high, and they are clear for all to see.

[I first heard this quoted by Steve Lawson in one of his 2007 addresses at Resolved. I have seen it quoted on the internet in several different places, with some minor variations. This is the one I prefer.]

  1. I believe that this was first quoted by AP many years ago (My mother had the clipping on her fridge for years) as the last words of a young African martyr. Could be folklore but it came from AP back in the 50’s or 60’s. This is the first time I have seen another version. I have it as wallpaper on my laptop as a reminder of who I am in Christ…

    1. That could well be; I transcribed it from a sermon by Steve Lawson and he didn’t indicate a source in the sermon.

  2. This is Truly what being a Disciple of. our LORD JESUS CHRIST entales, It is not about me, it is lifting HIM up, letting HIS. Light shine through me!!

  3. It Will Cost you everything by Pastor Dr Steven J Lawson. Great sermon! His example of the pearl seller was fantastic as well! Great way to end a profound sermon. I now make a point to read this piece every day!
