Two thoughts about parenting

Yesterday I was doing some reading in preparation for a parental dedication on Sunday morning and came across these two gems from the pen of John Younts:

“Parents looking primarily for enjoyment from such creatures are in for a major disappointment. Loving, enjoyable relationships between parents and children are a by-product of good parenting, not the goal. Even at that, the enjoyment of children is a blessing from God that should not be assumed or taken for granted, Many good parents have endured heartbreaking situations with their children.”

“Parents, your children should hear God’s truth from your lips. Yes, it is important for them to hear it from the pastor and from others. But your children must also hear it from you. They must hear God’s truth in your everyday talk. You must look out the window to your world and talk to your children about the truth of God in relation to what you see. [For instance,] If you want your children to withstand the onslaught of sensuality into their lives, you must give them the precious treasure of frank, honest, everyday talk about sexual temptation.”
